Basic Entrepreneurship Courses for Farmers
This program is to primarily develop entrepreneurial capabilities of farmers in order that they can increase productivity of farm production, improve vertical/horizontal agribusinesses linkages and produce market based, demand led crop diversification. The basic entrepreneurship course has three modules namely:
Module 1: Unlocking Farmers' Entrepreneurial Competencies
This module will help them assess and develop their personal enterprising behavior, a critical factor in running the farm as an enterprise activity and not only as a production activity.
- Explain why a farm must be viewed as a business
- Describe the impact of personal entrepreneurial competencies (PECs) in managing the risks inherent in a farm enterprise
- Display PEC behaviors consistent with the proactive life habits and beliefs
- Commit themselves to pursue entrepreneurial actions by preparing an action plan for personal entrepreneurial development as a farmer
Module 2: Business Opportunity Identification
This module will help them identify, screen and select business opportunities/projects, that can augment farm income.
- Exercise skills in generating project ideas from typical day-to-day stimuli facing farmers in the community
- Identify project ideas for expansion or improvement of his particular farm business
- Demonstrate information seeking skills and summarize insights in a SWOT analysis of his farm business
- Screen and rank business ideas according to probable viability
- Match business ideas with personal vision, competencies and resources
Module 3: Farm Business Planning
This module will help them acquire skills in business planning and develop their own farm business plans.
- Prepare marketing, technical, organization and finance aspects of a farm business plan
- Apply analytical techniques identified in the FSD approach espoused by DAR
- Demonstrate ability to explain and defend the farm business plan
The three modules can be stand alone training programs.
